It is exciting to look at all the possible kitchen cabinet designs and possibilities, but unfortunately, kitchen cabinet renovations are one of the most expensive upgrades you can make in your home.
Once you have decided to reface your cabinets, the next step is to decide upon a color scheme and wood finish for your newly transformed kitchen oasis! If you are planning a cabinet refinishing project, why not paint the walls as well and give the room an extreme makeover? Just be sure to keep your chosen color palette in mind when determining which wood finish to select. Earthy hues, such as rusty browns and sage, are often very relaxing and pair well with a cherry or maple finish. Or if you prefer vibrant shades of blue or yellow, white cabinets provide a sharp contrast and a modern style. Regardless of the combination you select, you will feel as though you are walking into a completely new room when the project is complete!
Cabinet refinishing is usually the cheapest way to change the look of your cabinets, but in order for this to work correctly, your existing doors, drawers and structure of the cabinets need to be in good condition. The doors and drawers are removed and everything is sanded down. A new paint or stain is applied to everything and new hardware is typically added to further refresh the look. You can do this on your own, though some homeowners do choose to hire a professional to handle it. A professional company that does this type of home improvement job on a regular basis will have a good idea if your cupboards are in good enough shape to handle sanding and repainting or restaining. Also, if you are planning on replacing laminate countertops with a solid surface such as marble or granite, make sure your cupboards are strong enough to handle the additional weight. If they are not strong enough, you may need to consider replacing them, going with a lighter weight countertop, or reinforcing the countertop with decorative brackets.
